Hannaford Brothers currently operates more than 120 supermarkets in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York – under the names Shop n Save and Hannaford Food and Drug Superstores. To support its expansion plans in New York State and New England, the company needed to build a new full-line grocery distribution center to complement its other center in Portland, ME. Hannaford targeted a 25-mile territory in and around New York's Capital Region and began to comparison shop the options. It found a real bargain, and great value, in Rensselaer County. Solution: The first priority for Hannaford was finding a location with easy access to the Interstate and truck routes – enabling the new distribution center to serve its broad footprint of stores. Next was the availability of a large, reasonably-priced parcel of shovel-ready land, with the ability to expand in the future. Thirdly, Hannaford wanted to put down roots in a community that supported its presence and welcomed its business. With its wide variety of land options, and with support from the Rensselaer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) in quickly finding the right site, Rensselaer County offered all the key ingredients. Results: They shopped. They saved. The Rensselaer County IDA helped this strong, community-oriented organization make its new home in Rensselaer County. |
