Rensselaer County Announces First Empire Zone Certified Business in County
Troy, NY., October 1, 2003 -- Rensselaer County Economic Development & Planning (RCED&P) announced that Autotask, a local web-based software firm located at 96 Thompson Hill Road in Rensselaer, N.Y., is the first business to be certified in the state Empire Zone Program. As part of the Empire Zone, a program established to stimulate economic growth, Autotask is now eligible to receive a multitude of benefits offered by the state, including tax incentives.

In November 2002, New York State designated 960 acres of land in Rensselaer County for the program. The county is currently in the process of reworking the Empire Zones, which currently occupy space in Troy and East Greenbush, to include other municipalities within the county.

The Empire Zone Program is a statewide initiative designed to revitalize regional economies throughout New York State. The program, which encourages economic development, job creation, and business expansion, has designated 71 areas throughout the state as Empire Zones. While the Empire State Development administers the zones, which occupy approximately 1,280 acres of land, each county is responsible for marketing and advertising the program to businesses. Major benefits include a credit for property tax paid, a sales-tax exemption of the purchase of property or services used by the business, a tax credit for business taxes paid and a host of other inducements.
